Deliverance

by James Dickey

Spoilers below. We meet Ed (the narrator), Lewis (kind of charismatic and outdoorsy), Bobby, and Drew (obvious redshirts). They are men with jobs and normal lives, seeking a taste of adventure and camaraderie. A dam is soon to be completed that will flood the valley, but right now it is wild, like some place in Alaska. Lewis convinces them to all go …

Pride and Prejudice

by Jane Austen

I’ve been wanting to read this for a while. We listened to it while driving to Lubbock and back. Having seen several adaptations of it, I was impressed with how generally faithful they all are. Some of the characters (Lady Catherine, Mr. Bennet) felt different in the book, but not in big ways. For example, in movie versions I usually see …

A sort of fable, blurbed by Robin Sloan, which I read on my trip to Newburyport for the developer conference. A Japanese postman finds out he is about to die. Fences

by August Wilson

A friend recommended this play, and it was great. Arthur Wilson is a black playwright who wrote stories of black people in Pittsburgh (or unnamed big cities that look a lot like Pittsburgh). This play opened in 1985 starring James Earl Jones as Troy.

Station Eleven

by Emily St. John Mandel

Technically, there is some action, but it rarely feels like it. When I was 40 pages from the end, it still seemed like not much had happened. The tone reminds …

Mr. Mercedes

by Stephen King

Re-listened to this audiobook – last listened to it in November 2015. Not my favorite overall, but it’s compelling, and I do like Hodges, Holly, and Jerome.

These stories are absolutely delightful. I listened to them while painting our kitchen cabinets (a month long project). We also watched the 2020 BBC show based on this. The first two seasons were pretty good, but after a while they stray too far from the source material.

My Family and Other Animals

by Gerald Durrell

A re-read. This is one of the first books we ever got from Audible way back in 2010, and I just listened to it again. Great!
