Managing Oneself

by Peter F. Drucker

In the Tim Ferris interview with Jim Collins, they talked at length about Peter Drucker, mentioning that he wrote some large number of books (14?) after the age of 75… or something like that. Then, I went to Half Price and came across this book. It’s very short, only 55 small pages. I like occasionally reading things like this that help you introspect.

Feedback Analysis: After a key decision or action, write down the expected outcome. Review these 9-12 months later.

Concentrate on your strengths. Work to improve them.

Root out and overcome intellectual arrogance. Don’t take pride in areas of ignorance.

Remember courtesy and manners when working with others.

Understand your “performance modes.” Are you a reader or a listener? How do you learn? Read, listen, write, take notes, do, talk. Do you work better alone or with people? Do you perform well under stress? Do you prefer a big or small company?

Ethics: What kind of person do I want to see in the mirror each morning?

Plan for no more than 18 months in the future. Choose difficult (stretch!) but achievable goals.

Take responsibility for relationships. Know the strengths, performance modes, and values of your coworkers. This is the secret of “managing” your boss.
