The Hiding Place

by Corrie ten Boom

This book was great. There are many passages worth quoting, but I will mention just one. At the concentration camp in Ravensbruck, Corrie and her sister Betsie were moved to a new building. They lay down on the reeking straw only to discover that the place is crawling with fleas. Corrie bursts out, “Betsie, how can we live in such a place?”

In reply, Betsie prays, “Show us how.” And then she recalls a verse they had just been reading in 1 Thessalonians: “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.”

"That's it, Corrie! That's His answer. 'Give thanks in all circumstances!' That's what we can do. We can start right now to thank God for every single thing about this new baracks!"

I stared at her, then around me at the dark, foul-aired room.

"Such as?" I said.

"Such as being assigned here together."

I bit my lip. "Oh yes, Lord Jesus!"

"Such as what you're holding in your hands."

I looked down at the Bible. "Yes! Thank You, dear Lord, that there were no inspections when we entered here! Thank You for all the women, here in this room, who will meet You in these pages."

"Yes," said Betsie. "Thank you for the very crowding here. Since we're packed so close, that many more will here!" She looked at me expectantly. "Corrie!" she prodded.

"Oh, all right. Thank You for the jammed, crammed, stuffed, packed, suffocating crowds."

"Thank You," Betsie went on serenely, "for the fleas and for ---"

The fleas! This was too much. "Betsie, there's no way even God can make me grateful for a flea."

"Give thanks in all circumstances," she quoted. "It doesn't say 'in pleasant circumstances.' Fleas are part of the place where God has put us."

And so we stood between piers of bunks and gave thanks for fleas. But this time I was sure Betsie was wrong.

Oddly, unlike every other place in the camp, they find that they have almost no supervision in the new barracks. They have Bible studies and times of worship without trouble from the guards. At one point, Betsie is taken to the camp hospital, and she comes back having learned the reason why. It turned out that the guards wouldn’t enter the building because it was crawling with fleas!

I relayed this story to the family when we had been without power for about 40 hours during the Feb 2021 snow and ice storms. About halfway through telling the story, when I got to the Bible verse “in everything give thanks,” the power came back on! We rushed around plugging things in, etc., but then reconvened to say a prayer of thanks.
