God and Man and Monkey at Yale

by Christopher N. White

This was a 44 page pamphlet about Darwin, the loss of his daughter Annie, and his loss of faith.

Late in life, he told a friend that “he would very much like to hear Handel’s Messiah again, but he was afraid to try it. ‘I dare say I should find my soul too dried up to appreciate it as in old days; and then I should feel very flat.’”

The author alludes to evidence that Darwin may have returned to the faith before his death, based on an account by an evangelist named Lady Hope. I find on Wikipedia that Darwin’s children denied her account and accused her of falsehood, and it’s disputed even by Answers in Genesis. It seems to me that we can’t treat this account as reliable, even if we would like to believe Darwin repented.
